This roofing project involved much more than replacing the visible roof covering. With the existing roof stripped back, Safeguard Roofing & Building installed new insulation between the rafters before building up the new roofing system with a breathable membrane, pressure-treated battens and Thrutone slates. THE PROJECT
The project provided an opportunity to address the roof as a complete build-up rather than concentrating only on the finished slate surface. Once the existing roof covering had been removed, the roof was open for the insulation and new roofing system to be installed in the correct sequence.
New insulation was fitted between the rafters, followed by a breathable roofing membrane and new pressure-treated battens. The roof was then finished with new Thrutone slates, creating the clean slate appearance visible on the completed property.
As part of the same project, brackets for the property’s solar panels were incorporated during the roofing work. Planning these elements while the new roof was being installed allowed the bracket positions to be integrated into the roof rather than treating them as an afterthought once the slate installation was complete.
INSULATION
With the roof stripped, Safeguard installed new insulation between the existing rafters before the external roofing layers were completed.
Carrying out the insulation work at this stage provides direct access to the spaces between the rafters. The photograph below shows the installation progressing across the roof, with one section insulated while the remaining structure was still exposed.
This project combined the new slate roof with insulation work beneath it. The insulation, membrane, battens and slates each form a different part of the completed roof build-up.
NEW ROOF BUILD-UP
Once the insulation stage was complete, a new breathable roofing membrane was installed as part of the new roof system.
The membrane sits beneath the battens and slates, providing a secondary layer within the pitched roof construction. New pressure-treated battens were then installed to create the fixing structure for the new slate covering.
Using new battens as part of the replacement meant the Thrutone slates could be installed onto a newly prepared roofing system rather than relying on the previous battens.

SLATE INSTALLATION
The next stage was the installation of the new Thrutone slate covering. The slates were fitted progressively across the prepared battens to form the finished external roof surface.
The photographs from the project show the installation at two different stages. In the first, the Safeguard team is actively working across the roof as the new slate covering begins to take shape. In the second, considerably more of the roof has been completed, showing the consistent finished appearance developing across the roof slope.
